Cheap Mobile Phone Deals

A woman talking on a cell phone.People are always looking to save a buck wherever they can, and finding a cheap mobile phone deal can do just that.  Before you can start looking at the different plans and options available, you have to decide on what you want from your mobile phone and what you can afford to pay.  If you only need to make phone calls, then there are numerous cheap options available.  If you want to have access to e-mail and the Internet, your options become more limited.

Basic plans will involve an older phone.  Selecting an older phone can make it much easier if you are looking for a cheap mobile phone plan.  In many cases, older phones will be provided for free is you simply sign up for a plan.  With these phones, you will be able to place phone calls and send standard text messages, and that's about it.  You'll get what you pay for, just remember you aren't paying a whole lot.  These plans tend to be dirt cheap and provide you with the services you need.  In addition to basic plans like these, prepaid cell phones can be the cheapest way to go.  Purchasing a cheap mobile phone then loading it up with minutes can save a small fortune.  While you are going to be paying more per minute, you will have no contractual obligation, no extra charges, no bills, and if you decide you no longer what this type of plan, just stop using it and you'll never have to worry about it again.

If you are shopping around for a cheap mobile phone deal and do not want to go the prepaid route, many cell phone providers offer a basic rate plan.  You will be provided with a certain number of minutes a month and you will be charged a higher fee should you go over that set amount of minutes.  You will also have no access to text messaging or the Internet.  Access to these will cost you extra.  You may also have to purchase your mobile phone, and pay and standard activation fee.  When shopping around for different cheap mobile phone deals, look for free phone offers and no activation fee offers.  While these can be helpful, they will typically come with guidelines.  In order to get these perks, you may have to sign up for a more expensive plan, or even sign a contract.

A man holding a smartphone. When shopping for cheap mobile phone deals, contracts should be avoided.  While they can give you a cheaper monthly rate, they tend to charge more for minutes you use over your given amount, and the various fees and stipulations can be stifling.  Should you not be able to pay one month, you will be charged a large fee.  If you decide you no longer want the plan, you will have to pay an huge amount to get out of the contract.  Some companies will even have you pay the remainder of the contract before they will let you out of it.  If your phone gets damaged or stolen before your contract is up, you will still have to pay your bill or purchase a new phone at a marked up price.  In other words, contracts and cheap mobile phone deals do not mix too well.  You should find a company that offers competitive rates without the contract.  You may pay a little bit more per month, but you will be able to leave at any time without all the costly fees.

You should also be wary of text messages.  While many phone companies will not charge you for messages sent to your phone, you should check with them before you have people paging you this way.  You should also have this added to your plan if you are going to be using this feature.  Text messages, if not included in your plan, will be added into your bill with a standard fee for each message sent.  If you plan on only sending a message or two here or there, it will be fine to leave it off, but the average person who uses text messaging send over 500 per month.  That averages out to about 16 a day.  If you are charges $.05 per message, that's over $25 a month when you can get a plan to handle that amount of text messaging for around $5.

These are just for a basic mobile phone, but what if you want more?

Having access to e-mail and the Internet will quickly drive up the cost of your mobile phone every month.  If you do not have it put into your plan, they will charge you by the kilobyte of downloaded data.  This will add up quickly, since a basic web page is easily over 100 kilobytes.  Just accessing one web page, one time, could cost you $1.  That will add up really fast.

Most major mobile phone providers offer basic Internet and e-mail plans that allow you to have the access to the Internet without the fees.  Most will offer a basic package that puts a limit on the amount of data you can download in a month.  These plans are never cheap, since most people will easily go over the set amount, then get charged extra for every bit of data they use over that.  If you are looking for a cheap mobile phone deal, it is far most cost effective to get the unlimited data plan offered by your cell phone provider.  This keeps any additional fees from being tacked on at the end of the month, gives you the freedom to use the Internet and you e-mail whenever you want, and keeps you pocket a little more plump.
